‘Pitnacree’ is a modern Highland cottage with a lovely garden and a wee burn (stream), set in an elevated position above the conservation village of Balmacara Square, with views to Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye. The village houses a National Trust for Scotland visitor centre, gift shop, cafe and beauty parlour. This beautiful peninsula is the Balmacara Estate and walks from the house include shoreside routes (1 mile to the local grocer), woodlands, lochs and hills. Four miles away is the idyllic coastal village of Plockton (location of the TV series ‘Hamish MacBeth‘), with inns and restaurants serving wonderful seafood and locally brewed ale. Some interesting places to visit within a short drive are Eilean Donan Castle, Glenelg Brochs, the otter hide at Kylerhea and Attadale Gardens. There are boat trips from several local harbours including Plockton and Kyle. Beautiful sandy beaches are found at Plockton, Lower Breakish (Broadford), Sandaig – Gavin Maxwell’s home in ‘Ring of Bright Water‘ – and Applecross, and there is a swimming pool in Kyle. The spectacular Isle of Skye (over the Skye Bridge 3.5 miles) boasts magnificent scenery, castles, crafts and wildlife, and the well known Talisker whisky distillery.
Local wildlife includes otters, pine martens (visit the garden) seals, dolphins, golden and white tailed eagles and many other species of birds, mammals, butterflies, wildflowers etc – http://www.skye.co.uk/documents/wildlifeleaflet.pdf
Kyle of Lochalsh, 3 miles away, is served by the train service from Inverness (78 miles).
